Getting my cat to calm down at bed time?

We volunteer at a shelter and it is closing. We took (another) cat home. She is awesome. She is about two and hasn't ever lived in a home. She is a perpetual kneader. in fact we have changed her name to Sven--as in Sweedish meuse. It's the funniest thing ever, until it's time for bed. She kneads us and the pillows, bedspread, dog (just kidding)...whatever is around. We have tried playing with her for about an hour a couple hours prior to bed time. If I put her out of the bedroom and shut the door, she will incessantly shake the door. I know she's still a little insecure about being out of the shelter....Any other ideas on how to stop this?
