I need information about pre-slave trade Africa?

Just out of curiosity, because Africa is not as well known as other places. Usually, when people think of medieval times, they think of Western Europe. What was going on in Africa before it was colonized by the French and Portuguese? Why was there such prosperity before the slave trade? Links to more information would be appreciated!
